The Flower Language and Legend of Willow

The Flower Language of Willow

The pronunciation of "liu" is very similar to "liu", so since ancient times, some literati and poets have used willow trees as trees to express their feelings. In ancient times, transportation was very inconvenient, and if people parted, it was usually difficult to see each other again. Therefore, when people said goodbye to others, they often used willow trees to express their farewell and nostalgia.

From this perspective, willows are also relatively sad trees, so its flower language is sadness.

Common meanings of willow trees

Liu means "liu" and means "stay", so it often means farewell. Sometimes it is also used to express praise for women, like the saying of willow waist. There is also a saying that willow is one of the four major ghost trees among the people and can gather ghosts. Some also say that willow is a masculine tree and can be used to ward off evil spirits.

The Legend of the Willow Tree

In fact, most of the legends about willow trees are scattered records.

It is recorded in the ancient legendary novel "Records of Opening the Grand Canal" that after Emperor Yang of Sui ascended the throne, he ordered the excavation of the Tongji Canal. Someone then suggested that willow trees be planted beside the banks of the canal. Emperor Yang of Sui thought this suggestion was very good, so he subsequently ordered that willow trees be planted beside the banks of the newly excavated Grand Canal. Later, Emperor Yang of Sui planted the willow tree himself and left an imperial edict, giving the willow tree the surname Yang, giving the willow tree the emperor's surname.

From then on, willow trees were called poplar willows.
