Chemical components of Verbena

The whole verbena contains verbenaside, amygdalin, verbenaside, lupeol, ursolic acid, aucubin, and artemisinin. The leaves of verbena contain verbena glycosides, adenosine, and β-carotene. The roots and stems of verbena contain stachyose.

Verbena Physiology

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic

The substances in verbena extracted with water and alcohol have anti-inflammatory effects.

Antitussive

Verbena has a certain antitussive effect when decocted in water. Its active antitussive ingredients are β-sitosterol and verbena glycosides.

How to take verbena

Mash the young leaves of verbena into juice, add wine and mix it, then take it twice to treat malaria, chills and fever. Take five cents of verbena and a pinch of old tea, decoct them in water and drink it to treat dysentery. Mix verbena and sage in a 1:1 ratio, decoct in water, remove the residue and make into pills with powder, which can treat edema after taking.

Other effects of verbena

Verbena glycosides can inhibit the excitement of sympathetic nerve endings and promote milk secretion in mammals. It also has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation and menstruation, and promoting diuresis and reducing swelling.

Verbena toxicity

Verbena has a low toxicity, but is insoluble in blood. Some people experience nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and abdominal pain after taking it.
