Why does the white palm turn green?

Is white palm white?

Of course, the name white palm comes from its shape.

The shape of the white palm is very unique and exquisite. It is as white as snow lotus and curled into a spoon shape, like a folded palm, hence the name white palm. Its pedicels are long and higher than the leaves, and its flowers are large and prominent, as white as snow, resembling a white crane standing upright with its head raised, so it is also called "white crane lily". Because its shape resembles a boat floating downstream, it is also known as "smooth sailing". Therefore, the "white character" in white calla lily is the same as the color white.

Natural Phenomenon

As we all know, during the flowering process of anthurium, the flowers are first as white as snow, then slowly turn green, and finally become the same green as the stems and leaves, and the yellow spadix also turns black. This is not a mutation, but a normal phenomenon of flower metabolism. There is a small amount of chlorophyll in the petals of white calla lilies. When the flowers are about to wither in the late stage of blooming, the trace elements remain in the plant body, a large amount of carotene is decomposed, and only chlorophyll is decomposed last, so the color of the petals will turn green, and the flowers will wither after a few days. At this time, you may consider cutting the entire inflorescence from the base to avoid excessive consumption of nutrients which will be detrimental to the next flowering.

Therefore, it is a natural phenomenon that after the white anthurium has bloomed for a period of time, it turns from white to green and becomes a "green anthurium". There is no need to be too surprised. The color of the "green anthurium" is emerald green, like a perfect handicraft, and it is also very ornamental.

Light reasons

In addition, if the spathe turns green just a few days after opening, it is not a natural phenomenon. This is mainly caused by too weak light. Any white flower color will appear green under weak light conditions. At this time, it will turn white by slightly increasing the light intensity. Apply some special fertilizer to ensure the quality of the anthurium and make it bloom longer.

So don’t worry, when the white calla lily turns green, try to add more light. Once it accumulates enough nutrients, it will turn back to white on its own!
