A complete guide to the maintenance and management of oleander at home

temperature

Oleander prefers a warm and humid climate, is slightly cold-resistant, and can overwinter in the open in warm areas. In Beijing, the branches of home potted plants can be tied together, bagged and placed in a sheltered, sunny place to overwinter, otherwise they are prone to frost damage. Smaller plants should be moved indoors for maintenance before the beginning of frost, and then moved outdoors in April of the following year for routine management. It can overwinter in the open field under the microclimate conditions south of the Yangtze River.

illumination

Oleander prefers a growing environment with plenty of sunlight and is also slightly shade-tolerant. During the cultivation and maintenance process, the daily lighting time should be ensured to be no less than six hours. During home maintenance, it should be placed in places where direct sunlight is available, such as windowsills or balconies.

Moisture

Proper watering is the key to managing oleander well. Improper watering in winter and summer can cause leaves and flowers to fall, or even death. Water once a day in spring and once in the morning and evening in summer to keep the moisture content of the potting soil at about 50%. Spray water on the leaves frequently. If it is too dry, the leaves will easily fall and wither. You can water less in winter, but the moisture content of the potting soil should be kept at around 40%. Use clean water to wash away dust on the leaves frequently.

nutrient

Organic soil and miscellaneous fertilizers should account for about 20% of the potting soil. If used for chicken manure, 15% is sufficient. Fertilization time: once before Qingming Festival and once after the Autumnal Equinox.

Method: Dig a circular trench around the pot, apply fertilizer and then cover with soil. After fertilizing during the Qingming Festival, apply fermented bean cake water once every ten days or so; after fertilizing during the Autumnal Equinox, apply bean cake water or peanut cake water, or ten times the amount of chicken manure liquid, once every ten days or so. If the above fertilizers are not available, you can use human urine that has been decomposed for more than seven days and add five to seven times the amount of water, pour it along the edge of the pot, and then water it thoroughly. The principle for fertilizers high in nitrogen is to apply them dilute, light, less and frequently to prevent root rot.
