How to grow chives on the balcony

Planting season: All seasons

Spring and fall are the best seasons to grow chives, but they can also be grown in the summer. Flower lovers who have heating in winter can also plant it.

Chives can create sparks on your tongue with food in any season, so you might as well leave a corner on the balcony for chives so that you can enjoy the delicious condiment at any time.

Pot soil selection: flower pots with breathable and fertile soil

There are a variety of flower pots to choose from for growing chives, but you need to make a few small holes at the bottom of the pots to allow excess water to drain out smoothly.

The soil should be loose and fertile and watered thoroughly the day before sowing. You can mix some flower fertilizer into the soil.

Planting method: sowing

Soak the chives in 55° water for 20 minutes before sowing, take them out and dry them.

Things to note when growing at home

Transplanting method

The plants can be divided and transplanted about 40 days after sowing. If the chives grow quickly and you find the pot is crowded, you can transplant them in advance.

The transplanting pot soil should also be watered thoroughly in advance. Dig a 4-6 cm hole on the soil surface, select well-growing onion seedlings, bury them in the small hole, compact them lightly, cover them with moist fine soil, flatten and compact them lightly, and water them.

Feeding method

Both the white part and the leaves of chives can be eaten, but it is recommended that you only pinch the leaves when picking them, and do not pull them up by the roots. This way, the chives can continue to grow and produce leaves, giving you a sense of inexhaustible abundance.
