Best breeding season for succulents

Best breeding season for succulents

Autumn is the season for breeding and purchasing succulents

The hot summer is an unavoidable season of suffering for succulent plants, and many of them are in danger of death. However, as long as you survive the summer, the succulents will regain their vitality.

Autumn is the best growing season for succulents and also the best breeding season. Succulent lovers usually start purchasing large quantities of succulents in the fall. On the one hand, they buy some new varieties to enrich their gardens, and on the other hand, they make up for the succulents that died in the summer.

How to propagate succulents with a high survival rate

sowing

To sow succulents, you need to have enough patience and an absolutely comfortable breeding environment. You should know that sowing succulents is not an easy task. According to the experience of many flower lovers, the succulents suitable for sowing at this time include: Snow Lotus, Dongyun Ebony, Spring Miracle, and Mountain Rose. Although some of these things are expensive, you might as well give them a try!

The sowing time is generally from the end of September to mid-October. Sow the prepared seeds (usually 10 to 20 seeds) in pots, then cover them with plastic film, or use professional seedling containers. Most varieties will germinate 10 days after sowing. When most of the seedlings have sprouted, remove the film in time to prevent them from growing too tall. Just wait for them to grow up slowly during the remaining time!

Cuttings

Leaf cuttings: Choose thick, plump, disease- and insect-free succulent leaves and place them on the surface of the soil, or bury a small amount of the bottom of the leaves in the soil. It's that simple. As for the leaf cutting method, I will not introduce it in detail, go and check out the methods of the masters! ☞ Leaf propagation method for growing succulent plants at home

Stem cuttings: Insert the cut side branches or top branches of the succulent directly into the soil 3 to 4 cm. Roots will slowly grow at the junction of the stem and the soil, and leaves will also grow on the ground.

Root cuttings: Use the underground roots of succulents for reproduction, for example, the roots of the water hyacinth can grow new plants. Another way is to leave the remaining part of the succulent plant after beheading it without digging out the roots, and new plants will grow at the cut.

Precautions for succulent breeding

sowing

When sowing, don't expect every seed to germinate. Lower your expectations and you may get an unexpected surprise.

Leaf cuttings and stem cuttings are most frequently used

Whether it is leaf cuttings or stem cuttings, the leaves and stems need to be cut off and placed in a cool place for 3 days. On the one hand, this allows the wound to heal, and on the other hand, the moisture in the leaves evaporates, which will cause rooting and sprouting faster.

Yellow, blooming, or injured plants are not suitable for cuttings

Many flower lovers use cuttings to propagate because the mother plant is damaged and the leaves fall off, so they directly use the leaves for cuttings. In fact, this practice is incorrect. Leaves that are injured, waterlogged, or yellowed are not suitable for cuttings. There is no need to explain the reason. In addition, the leaves of flowering plants are not suitable for cuttings. If you use cuttings on branches with flower buds, after a period of time, not only will they not take root, but they will bloom instead. After the flowers wither, the branches will also rot. Isn't it a waste of work!
