How to grow Japanese red maple bonsai

soil

Red maple bonsai requires well-drained, loose and fertile soil. You can mix leaf mold and garden soil with a small amount of river sand, and then add a small amount of bone meal as base fertilizer.

illumination

In summer, it should be placed in a semi-shaded place to avoid strong sunlight, and during the growing period, it should be placed outdoors in a sunny place sheltered from the wind. It is not recommended to place it indoors. If the temperature is too low in winter, you can place it in a well-lit place indoors.

Watering

Red maple bonsai likes a humid environment and needs to be watered more frequently in summer. When the temperature is too high, spray water on the leaves to cool them down. Normally, water less and just keep the soil moist. Avoid rain as it may cause root rot.

temperature

Red maple bonsai has a certain degree of cold resistance. In the winter in the north, it should be placed indoors for maintenance, and the indoor temperature should be kept free of freezing. Just maintain normal temperature during the growing period.

Fertilization

Apply thin fertilizer once a month. Too much fertilizer will cause it to grow too fast. Starting from September, you should apply potassium fertilizer, such as potassium sulfate solution or wood ash extract, to keep the leaves bright red.

Pest and disease prevention

Red maple bonsai is susceptible to powdery mildew. Ventilation should be strengthened and control should be carried out using mancozeb wettable powder, methyl tobacillus, or carbendazim wettable powder. It is also susceptible to damage by longhorn beetles, which can be killed by spraying with dichlorvos or imidacloprid.
