What are the bulbous flowers?

Bulbs

The shape of the underground stem is spherical or oblate, and obvious ring nodes can be seen. There are lateral buds on the nodes, covered with a membranous sheath, and the terminal buds are well developed. There are fine roots at the base, which can grow into thick traction roots before and after flowering, supporting the above-ground part and preventing the new bulbs growing on the mother bulb from being exposed to the ground.

Bulbous flowers include gladiolus, freesia, Spanish iris, etc.

Bulbs

The thick and fleshy leaf deformation body, that is, the scales embrace to form an underground stem. Scales grow on the stem disk, from which axillary buds are produced, and when the axillary buds become hypertrophic, they will become new bulbs.

Bulbs are divided into two types: bulbs with skin and bulbs without skin. Common bulbs with skin include daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, etc., while common bulbs without skin include lilies, etc.

Tubers

The underground rhizome is tuberous in shape, with no annular nodes on the surface. Roots grow at the bottom of the tuber, and there are several germination points at the top.

This type of bulbous flowers includes white peony, calla lily, cyclamen, bulbous begonia, ranunculus, etc.

Roots

The underground taproot is enlarged and blocky in shape. There are dormant buds near the root neck, from which new shoots sprout. After the new roots elongate, many new tubers are generated at the lower part.

This type of bulbous flower includes dahlias, peonies, etc.

Rhizomes

The underground stem is enlarged and root-like in shape, with obvious nodes and internodes. There are degenerate small scale leaves on the nodes, axillary buds on the leaf axils, and especially many lateral buds at the top of the rhizome. The aboveground branches develop from these and produce adventitious roots.

This type of bulbous flowers includes canna, lotus, hosta, etc.
