Peony cultivation methods and precautions

Peony cultivation methods and precautions

1. Soil

It is best not to plant peonies in the soil casually, because if the soil is too alkaline, it will have a bad effect on it, causing it to wither and drop leaves, or even die. When planting in a pot, choose loose sandy soil, which should be fertile and acidic.

2. Watering

It does not require frequent watering. The amount of water required will be greater before and after flowering, so you can place it outdoors in a light rain, but be sure to pour out the accumulated water in the pot in time. In addition, you can increase the amount of watering appropriately when the weather is drier.

3. Fertilization

Peony does not require much fertilizer. Generally speaking, it is sufficient to apply fertilizer three times a year. The first fertilization should be done when new shoots appear in spring, the second fertilization should be done when the leaves expand, and the third fertilization should be done when the flower buds expand. The last two fertilizations are mainly quick-acting fertilizers.

4. Lighting

It likes places with sufficient sunlight and can be placed on the balcony or in the yard, but if the light is too strong, appropriate shade should be provided.

5. Notes

1. Pruning

Please note that peony cannot be pruned when it is just planted, as this will affect its growth and even damage its roots. After the frost, the withered branches and rotten leaves should be cut off immediately to prevent them from being infected by bacteria or attracting pests and diseases.

2. Maintenance during flowering period

Before flowering, you should pay more attention and cut off the extra flower buds that appear on the side branches. This will concentrate the nutrients on the top buds, making the flowers on the top buds bloom more beautifully. After the flowers fall, cut off the flower stalks immediately to prevent them from forming seeds and consuming nutrients for the plant.
