How to grow azalea

How to grow azalea

1. Soil

Rhododendrons prefer loose, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. You can make your own culture soil by mixing leaf mold and peat soil. When potting, you can add an appropriate amount of bone meal to increase minerals.

2. Fertilization

The absorption capacity of azalea is relatively weak compared to other plants, so when applying fertilizer, we must adhere to the principle of "small amounts of fertilizer and frequent application". The fertilizer applied during different growth periods is also different. Applying liquid fertilizer mainly composed of phosphorus in the 2-4 months before flowering can make the flowers larger and brighter; stop fertilizing during the flowering period, otherwise it will cause the flowers to fall prematurely; applying nitrogen fertilizer about 10 days after the flowers fade can promote the growth of new branches. After late July, apply liquid fertilizer mainly containing phosphorus once every 10-15 days. It is dormant in winter and does not require fertilizer.

3. Watering

Azalea requires moist but not wet soil, so do not water it too frequently, otherwise it will cause root rot. In spring and autumn, water the plants every two or three days. In summer, water them every day. In winter, you should reduce the amount of watering. Be careful not to let the water be too cold when watering, otherwise it will affect its growth. When watering, you can clean and spray the leaves one by one.

4. Temperature

Rhododendrons should be moved into the city in early October and stay there until mid-to-late April of the following year. The most suitable room temperature in winter is around 10℃, and pay attention to ventilation. The sunshine will be milder after April, so it will be fine to be outdoors.
