Differences between Ligustrum lucidum and Photinia

1. Difference of blades

The leaves of Ligustrum lucidum are oblong, ovate or elliptic to broadly elliptic, leathery, with acute to acuminate apex, rounded or nearly rounded base, flat margin, glabrous, shiny on top, and petiole about 1-3 cm long, grooved on top, and glabrous.

The leaves of Photinia are oblong, obovate-elliptical or oblong, also leathery, with a pointed tip, a broad cuneate or rounded base, serrated edges, hairy at first but will fall off in the later growth. The petioles are relatively thick, 2-4 cm, also hairy at first but will fall off later.

2. Fruit Difference

The fruit of Ligustrum lucidum is kidney-shaped or nearly kidney-shaped, dark blue-black in color, and red-black with white powder when ripe. The fruiting period is from July to May of the following year.

The fruit of Photinia is spherical and varies in color from red to brown-purple. The fruiting period is from October to November.
