Is asparagus fern a bamboo? Illustrated instructions for pruning

1. Is it bamboo?

Asparagus fern is not a bamboo. It just looks somewhat similar to bamboo and its branches have nodes, but it is not a type of bamboo. It is a climbing plant of the Asparagaceae family. It usually does not grow very tall, looks very elegant, and has high ornamental value. It is very suitable for placement in a study or living room for maintenance. Its origin is Africa, and it is also known as cloud bamboo, cloud pine or spiny asparagus.

2. Pruning method

When the asparagus fern is in the seedling stage, simple pruning is required to remove the tender buds on the top. This will make the plant shorter and stronger and encourage it to grow more branches. When dry and messy branches grow on the plant, they should all be cut off to avoid reducing the overall aesthetics. It can also be shaped, and the specific shape can be determined according to your own preferences.

Asparagus fern is phototactic. During maintenance, you can change its shape by rotating the pot to achieve the shape you want. When pruning, the main thing is to cut off the weak branches and keep the stronger branches.

3. Notes

After pruning, you should pay attention to water control. The soil should not be too moist, and do not pour water on the pruning wounds, otherwise it will be infected with black rot. Pruning work is not only about pruning the part above the soil, but also pruning its root system. Rotten roots, old roots and growing roots should all be cut off. The entire root system should not exceed 2/3 of the flowerpot, which will be more beneficial to its growth.
