How to take care of newly bought irises

How to take care of newly bought irises

1. Soil

Iris prefers a fertile soil environment rich in humus, and it must be noted that it likes clay soil. And it doesn't like acidic environment, neutral or alkaline soil is more suitable for its growth. When you first buy it, there is generally no need to change the soil. But if the soil is very poor, you can also replace it.

2. Environment

The newly purchased iris has just been exposed to a new environment and needs to be given a more comfortable environment to promote its growth. It is best to give it a temperature of 15-17℃ and mild sunlight. Normally, you should adjust the temperature of the growing environment in time. If it is summer, you should provide it with appropriate shade and cooling to prevent it from being sunburned.

3. Watering

Irises prefer a humid growing environment and have high requirements for water. Don't water it too much when you just buy it, just water it a little bit on time. However, it cannot lack water. If there is insufficient water or it is often lacking water, slow germination and poor development may occur. You can also spray some water on the leaves to moisturize and cool them down, but do not maintain or spray water in an environment that is too sunny, as leaf spots are likely to appear.

4. Fertilization

Wait until it adapts to the environment before considering fertilizing. When transplanting irises and repotting them, you can add some well-rotted compost to the new pot, or you can add some wood ash as base fertilizer. It will grow rapidly during the growth period and requires an appropriate amount of fertilization. Before flowering, 1-2 more fertilizations can be added to improve the quality of flowering.

5. Pests and diseases

It is best to disinfect the soil and roots before repotting, because potted irises are prone to soft rot, which can cause root rot. After it happens, the plant should be dug out in time and the rotten parts should be cut off. After disinfection and sterilization, the plant should be repotted and re-soiled. And it is necessary to clean up dead branches and leaves in time and keep the leaves clean to reduce the risk of diseases and pests.
