How to plant cherry pits so they can germinate?

Cherry is a fruit that many people like to eat. It tastes sweet and sour and has high nutritional value. Since cherries are expensive in the market, many people want to grow them themselves. So how can you make cherry pits germinate? Let’s learn more about it below.

1. Seed selection

To germinate cherry seeds, you must first choose the right seeds. Generally speaking, you should choose cherry fruits that are ripe that year, remove the core, rinse the flesh outside the core with clean water, and place it in a cool place to dry for 1 to 2 days. This will remove any acidic residue in the pulp and prevent the seeds from becoming moldy or rotting.

2. Seed treatment

Cherry pits are very hard, so if you want the cherries to sprout, you have to remove the thick, impenetrable layer of the hard pit on the outside. When dealing with cherry pits, you can use some tools to remove the hard pits, but also be careful not to damage the cherry kernel inside that can germinate. Carefully remove the cherry kernel from the hard core and observe the appearance of the cherry kernel. Cherry kernels that are not obviously damaged can be germinated.

3. Germination method

Soaking method: Soak the cherry seeds in warm water, change the water once a day, and keep the water temperature at around 20-25℃. It takes about 10 to 15 days of soaking for the seeds to germinate.

Towel method: Wrap the cherry seeds in a moist paper towel, seal it in a plastic bag, and then place it in a warm and ventilated place. Check the wetness of the paper towel once a day and spray it with water if it is dry. It takes about 7 to 10 days for the seeds to germinate.

Low temperature method: Place the cherry seeds in the refrigerator and control the temperature between 0 and 5°C. It takes about 30 to 60 days for the seeds to germinate.

4. Sowing and seedling raising

When the cherry seeds grow roots 1 to 2 cm long, they can be sown. When sowing, choose soil and containers suitable for cherry growth. The soil should be loose, fertile, well-drained garden soil or sandy loam. Spread the cherry seeds evenly on the soil surface, and then cover them with a thin layer of soil with a thickness of about 1 to 2 cm. Then water thoroughly to keep the soil moist. Place the container in a warm, bright location, away from direct sunlight. It takes about 10 to 20 days for the seeds to grow into seedlings.

5. Seedling maintenance

Appropriately increase the light for seedlings to promote their photosynthesis and growth. But avoid strong sunlight at noon to prevent the seedlings from being burned. Water promptly to keep the soil moist but not too wet. Generally, water once in the morning and once in the evening. If the weather is hot and dry or rainy, make appropriate adjustments. Apply fertilizer appropriately. You can apply diluted liquid fertilizer once at the beginning and end of each month, such as decomposed chicken manure water or compound fertilizer water.

6. Proper pruning

When the seedlings grow to 20 to 30 cm in height, they can be pruned for the first time. When pruning, remove weak branches, diseased branches, crossed branches and other bad branches, and retain strong branches that grow outward. After pruning, apply wound healing agent and fertilize and water in time.

7. Repotting

When the seedlings grow to 10 to 15 cm in height, they can be moved to a larger container. When repotting, be careful not to damage the roots and try to retain the original soil ball. After repotting, water the plant thoroughly and place it in a cool place to rest for a while.
