What soil to use for potted lotus

What soil to use for potted lotus

Which soil to choose?

The requirements for soil selection for lotus are relatively loose. Any soil that can grow crops such as wheat and rice can be used, and of course river pond mud can also be used. But please note that river and pond mud with industrial pollution or sludge next to sewers cannot be used.

How much potting soil to add

The amount of soil in the pot is very important for the growth of lotus! If there is too little soil in the pot, the roots cannot be fixed and the plant will easily fall over in windy days; if there is too much soil in the pot, the water storage layer above the soil will be reduced and the plant's drought resistance will be weaker. However, how much more soil to add depends on the actual situation and can be decided flexibly:

See the size of the lotus root

For varieties with thick lotus roots and strong growth, more soil should be used in the pot; for varieties with thin lotus roots and weak growth, less soil should be used in the pot. When buying seeds, you must ask the florist!

Look at the soil

If the soil is loose and the particles are medium-sized, you can put more; if the soil is very sticky and the particles are very fine, you can put less.

Look at the local climate and environmental characteristics

The weather is windy in many areas, so put more soil in the pots to prevent the plants from falling over on windy days. Place the soil moderately in places with little wind.

How to prepare the soil

After the planting soil is selected, it cannot be used directly. Put the prepared soil into a pot, add a proper amount of water to soak it, and the amount of water added should be enough for the soil to turn into a paste. Soak for about a week. If you find that the soil in the pot is dark green with a few bubbles, it means that the soil is too fertile and you need to add clean water to dilute it. You can only plant it when the color turns light green.
