How to propagate the fortune tree

Cutting propagation method and precautions of fortune tree

When is the best time to take cuttings of the fortune tree?

The best time for cuttings is from late June to early August, preferably on cloudy days or in the morning or evening in summer, and cuttings can be done immediately after cutting.

What kind of cuttings should I choose for the fortune tree

① You need to choose strong, current-year, semi-lignified branches. It is best to cut them on a cloudy day or in the morning without wind.

②The cutting length should be 6 to 7 cm. The lower incision should be an inclined surface, located under the leaf or axillary bud. The incision should be smooth to facilitate the formation of healing tissue.

③ Generally, each cutting has two palm leaves. Be careful not to damage the leaves to facilitate photosynthesis.

How to propagate the fortune tree by cuttings

① When cutting, place half of the cuttings in rooting solution and soak for 20 to 24 hours. Take them out and rinse them with clean water. This will make it easier for the money tree to germinate.

②Insert the prepared cuttings into the perlite medium. If the cuttings are short, they can be inserted straight; if the cuttings are long, they can be inserted obliquely. The cutting depth should be based on whether it is tilted or not, which is generally 3 to 5 cm. If the branches are too long, the depth can be appropriately increased.

③After cuttings, water sufficiently and provide proper shade to avoid direct sunlight.

Precautions for maintenance after cutting of fortune tree

① Ventilate the soil every 3 days after cutting.

② From June to August, the temperature is high and water evaporates quickly. Spray water once in the morning and evening. The temperature should be maintained between 23 and 25 degrees and the humidity should be about 80% of the field water holding capacity.

③If you want the money tree to become lignified as soon as possible, you can spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate before the end of August to prevent fungal infection, and spray methyl thiophanate or carbendazim on the bed surface once every 7 days.

Seeding propagation method and precautions of fortune tree

Preparation before sowing

When purchasing seeds, it is best to choose to buy the fruit of the money tree directly. The seeds of the money tree are not easy to preserve and the survival rate is not high.

The soil for sowing can be peat, nutrient soil, peat + vermiculite, etc. The money tree actually does not have high requirements for soil.

Steps of sowing

① If the temperature can be kept above 20℃, then you don’t have to worry about the specific time and you can sow at any time. But be sure to pay attention to the temperature so it doesn't drop.

② Sow the seeds in the prepared medium. Be sure to cover them with fine soil after sowing, about 2 cm thick. Then place them in semi-shaded area and keep them moist.

③It will germinate about 7 days after sowing, and the germination temperature is 22-26℃. When the seedlings grow to about 25 cm, they can be thinned out appropriately, with spacing between dense and sparse plants, so that the seedlings can grow evenly.

④ During the seedling stage, apply a thin layer of nitrogen fertilizer and increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers 2-3 times to promote the expansion of the base of the stem. The money tree will be more ornamental after it grows up.

Notes on sowing

① It is suitable to use fresh seeds for sowing. Remove the seed shells and sow immediately. The survival rate is high, so be careful to identify them when purchasing seeds of the money tree.

② The soil covering after sowing should not be too thick, as it will make it difficult for the seeds to germinate.

③Temperature is of paramount importance for the germination of the Money Tree. Be careful not to allow the temperature to fluctuate too much before germination.

④If it is winter, you can carry out film covering.

Grafting propagation of fortune tree and precautions

Preparation before grafting

Two-year-old braided seedlings

The scion should be selected from one-year-old strong branches on trees that have been evaluated for flowering and fruiting.

Grafting steps

Grafting time and grafting method

The time can be chosen in mid-to-late February, and the survival rate can reach 80% by using the cleft grafting method.

Grafting method

① Cut the collected scion into 8-10 cm long scions with 2-3 buds. The lower end of the lowest bud of the scion, 3 cm away, is cut into 2-3 cm long wedge-shaped slopes from both sides. The scion surface should be flat and smooth.

② Use a cleaving knife to gently split vertically from the center of the cut surface of the rootstock, with a length of about 3 cm. Use a cleavage knife to gently pry open the cleft, and quickly insert the cut scion so that the cambium of the scion and the rootstock are aligned so that they can grow together.

③ After joining, tie them tightly with plastic film immediately, do not let the scion and rootstock move, and apply yellow mud or grafting wax to the incision to prevent moisture evaporation and prevent soil from falling into the incision and affecting healing.

④ Cover the rootstock and scion with wet soil.

Things to note when grafting the fortune tree

①After cutting the scion, keep it moist to prevent water evaporation and dirt from getting on it.

② When inserting the scion, do not insert the entire cut surface, leave a small part, about 0.2cm, exposed.

③ When burying the soil, you can do it from bottom to top. The soil at the scion should be slightly looser, and the soil at the top of the scion should be finer and looser to facilitate the germination of the scion.
