How to prune Euphorbia

How to prune adult Euphorbia

In fact, in many cases, flower lovers have to prune Euphorbia milii because the plants are too large and they have no choice but to do so. Euphorbia milii has the habit of blooming on the top branches, so pruning can promote branching and achieve the purpose of more flowering. Timely pruning is more beneficial. However, be sure to wear gloves when pruning to avoid being pricked by thorns.

Although pruning can promote branching and more flowering, the plant shape must also be ensured during pruning. It can be done in June or July after flowering, and diseased branches, overgrown branches, and weak branches should be cut off. The pruned branches can be used by flower lovers as cuttings to propagate new Euphorbia milii potted plants.

How to prune young Euphorbia

For young Euphorbia milii seedlings, pruning should be based on forming a skeleton as early as possible, but do not prune too much. When the seedlings grow to 10 cm, part of the top branches can be cut off to promote side branches. Later, when the side branches grow to a certain height, the tops of the branches can be cut off again to promote side branches again to form a basic backbone branch frame.

When the seedlings have grown 4 to 5 branches, they can be shaped and tied into a ball, a flower screen, or a flower basket, etc. The branches should be properly pulled, twisted and tied to make them develop in a certain direction. It should be noted that it will be difficult to shape them after this period of time.

Shaped Euphorbia pilosa potted plants

For the already formed Euphorbia milii, except for a few branches that prominently disrupt the shape, they can generally be lightly pruned or not pruned at all. Just pay attention to proper twisting and shaping. If you want the branches to grow new branches, you can bend the branches in the opposite direction and tie them together. New branches will soon grow from the binding.
