Pruning and shaping of Schefflera

Pruning and shaping of Schefflera

1. Main pruning

1. Topping and pinching: Topping and pinching is an important step in pruning. When the branches grow to about 20 cm, they need to be topped and pinched in time. Part of the upper branches should be removed, and two-thirds of the original branches should be retained. This will encourage the growth of side branches nearby and the plant shape will become fuller.

2. Thinning out dense branches: The plant grows vigorously and has strong sprouting ability, so the densely growing branches on the plant need to be processed. First, remove the withered and yellow branches, as these useless branches will only consume nutrients. Then thin out the dense branches to increase light transmittance.

3. Root pruning: Because Schefflera grows relatively fast and has a relatively developed root system, it needs to be repotted every spring. The roots can be pruned during the repotting period to remove old and rotten roots. This can also revitalize the roots and increase their ability to absorb water and fertilizer.

2. Modeling and pruning

In addition to basic pruning, pruning is also required for shaping. It is an ornamental plant, and aesthetics is very important. It can be pruned into a pagoda shape, allowing the branches below to grow vigorously, and pruning gradually from the bottom upwards. You can also trim it according to your favorite shape, just ensure it looks good.
