How to prune and shape oleander

How to prune and shape oleander

Topping method

Starting from the second year after planting, oleander plants can be shaped by trunk shaping. In order to encourage oleander to bud again and bloom continuously, it is necessary to pinch the top of the flowers appropriately after each flowering, so that the number of flowering times per year can reach 3 to 4 times.

Pruning

To make the oleander plant fuller and bloom more luxuriantly, this goal can also be achieved by dwarfing and shaping the oleander plant. When the height of the newly cultivated trunk reaches 40 cm, cut off the top tip from the full leaf node of the axillary bud at a position 20 to 30 cm from the plant. New shoots will grow after half a month and develop into the first layer of three-branched branches in the same year.

In autumn or early spring, determine the height for pruning the top according to the growth of new branches. The second pruning height should be about 70 cm. After three times of shaping and pruning, the crown of the oleander can be made into a "3 forks and 9 tops" shape, the plant is short, strong and full, and the ornamental effect is also good. Subsequent pruning work will mainly focus on cutting off sick and weak branches and aging branches inside to promote luxuriant branches and leaves and abundant flowers.

When renovating an old oleander stump, select strong main branches and cut off the suckers. The stump will be able to grow into shape in the second year after shaping. After shaping and pruning, the oleander has a full crown and a "mushroom shape".
