How to propagate Strelitzia

How to propagate Strelitzia

Sowing time

Late March every year is the best season for sowing and raising seedlings.

Preparation before sowing

Before sowing, we need to soak the seeds in 0.3% potassium permanganate or 500 times diluted 50% multi-fungus wettable powder for 2 hours, and then soak the seeds in 40°C warm water for 3 days. This can effectively remove the wax on the surface of the seed coat and facilitate germination.

Seedling medium

Peat, slag and fertile soil can be mixed in a ratio of 1:1:2 to make bed soil.

Strelitzia seeds are suitable for growing environment

The seeds are sown at 2.5×2.5 cm spots and covered with 03-1.0 cm of soil. The temperature is 25-30℃, the air humidity is 60%-70%, and the light intensity is 5000-10000Lx. Of course, this is an obsessive-compulsive approach. If you can't meet the above conditions, you can just do a rough one. Gradually increase the light after the seedlings emerge.

Transplanting

When the seedlings emerge from the soil and grow to two leaves and one heart, they can be transplanted for the first time. However, the soil must be disinfected before transplanting, and the plant spacing should be 10×10 cm.

After transplanting the seedlings, water them thoroughly to prevent them from being exposed to the sun. Fertilize every 5 days or so afterwards, and remove the shade shed only in autumn. Cover with film before frost to keep warm during the winter, and ensure ventilation time of more than 2 hours at noon every day.

Colonization

The seedlings can be transplanted after 2 years, and the best time is April to May. You can use the two-time transplanting method. The first transplanting can be a little more intensive. Wait until 1 to 2 years later, and then do the second transplanting. Note that it is best to use a row spacing of 60×60 cm and use the "pin" type transplanting.

We must pay attention to the need to water the Strelitzia thoroughly after transplanting. And remember to spray water on the leaves every day, add 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate or 0.2% potassium permanganate to the water. Transplanted seedlings generally begin to bloom in 3 to 4 years.
