How to propagate lily of the valley

Propagation of lily of the valley by division

Lily of the valley is generally propagated by division, usually by dividing the rhizome, or by dividing the small bulbs at the end of the rhizome. If you use this method to propagate lily of the valley, you can do it in spring or autumn, but the best time is to transplant it in autumn.

There will be some young shoots of different sizes on the rhizomes of lily of the valley. Cut each young shoot together with the stem segment and plant them separately. Control the soil moisture and temperature well. Generally, it will bloom in the second year. If you are growing it in a potted plant, you can select healthy, fat and large rhizomes in November, store them at 3°C - 5°C for 14-21 days, and then take them out and plant them in pots. In this way, 4-5 buds can grow in each pot, and then they can be cultivated.

Seed propagation of lily of the valley

Lily of the valley can also be propagated by sowing. Lily of the valley will grow red ripe fruits in autumn. We need to take the seeds from the ripe fruits of lily of the valley, and then sow the seeds of lily of the valley directly in the open soil. They will generally germinate in the spring of the second year. After sowing the seeds of lily of the valley, be sure to keep the soil moist and provide appropriate shade. Lily of the valley is a cold-resistant and shade-loving plant. At the same time, weeds must be removed in a timely manner. However, lily of the valley propagated by seeds grows relatively slowly and has a longer growing period. It usually takes three to four years for it to bloom.
