Bougainvillea is a hard-flowering plant. If properly cared for, it can bloom many times a year. The flowers are numerous and colorful, giving people a festive feeling. However, some flower lovers have found that although their bougainvillea grows vigorously and has dense branches and leaves, it is difficult for them to bloom, or the number of flowers is very small. In fact, excessive watering and fertilizing does not necessarily promote more flowering of bougainvillea. The correct maintenance method is the key. Let’s learn together how to promote the flowering of bougainvillea quickly and effectively. 1. Prune long branches When the branches of bougainvillea grow too quickly but no flowers bloom during the flowering period, it may be because the plant uses too many nutrients for branch growth rather than flower buds. At this time, the plant needs to be pruned, branches that are too high or too long need to be shortened, weak branches need to be removed, and some of the dense leaves need to be removed appropriately to reduce nutrient consumption and promote the growth of flowering branches. 2. Supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizers Improper fertilization will also affect the flowering of bougainvillea. If too much nitrogen fertilizer is used and not enough phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, the plants may grow too tall. During the growing period of Bougainvillea, nitrogen fertilizer should be the main fertilizer, but during the flower bud growth stage, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be used instead. Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers help promote flowering. You can apply potassium dihydrogen phosphate once a week, dilute it at a ratio of 1:1000, and then water the roots or spray the branches and leaves to promote the formation of flower buds. 3. Proper water control Bougainvillea is drought tolerant, and overwatering may cause the plant to grow leggy. Proper water control can encourage the plant to grow flower buds. When the plant is growing vigorously, reduce the frequency of watering and keep the soil in the pot moderately dry. Water it thoroughly only when the leaves begin to wilt slightly. After about a month, flower buds may form on the branches. 4. Get more light Bougainvillea loves light. If it lacks sunlight for a long time, the plant may grow too tall, have thin branches, and no flower buds will grow. To promote flowering, bougainvillea should be placed in an environment with sufficient sunlight. Adequate photosynthesis helps the plant accumulate nutrients and promotes flower bud differentiation. If your bougainvillea has not bloomed for a long time, prune the branches in time, control water, and add phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Soon, your bougainvillea will bloom with a large number of flowers on the branches.
