How to water Christmas cactus

How to water Christmas cactus

Watering methods for four seasons

Winter and Spring

Generally, the weather is colder in winter and spring, so you can water the plants once every 7-10 days. When the temperature rises in spring, wait until the soil in the pot is almost dry before watering. The principle of watering is not to water unless the soil is dry. When you do water, water thoroughly, and then make sure the soil is completely dry before watering. Christmas cactus prefers partial shade, so after taking it out of the house in spring, try to place it in a place sheltered from the wind and facing the sun.

summer

From spring to summer, apply thin liquid fertilizer once every 10-14 days. After summer officially begins, move the plant to a ventilated and shaded place for maintenance. During the high temperature period in summer, stop fertilizing and water less, because the growth of Christmas cactus stagnates at this time, but you can spray water 2-3 times a day. If you water too much at this time, it will cause root rot.

Bud stage

Although watering is not required during the bud formation period, water should be sprayed frequently to keep the stems and buds moist. The temperature during the flowering period should be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. During the short dormant period after flowering, water less and stop fertilizing. Cut off the remaining flowers and trim them. After new buds grow on the stems, water normally again.

autumn

In autumn, Christmas cactus should be watered more frequently, especially fertilizer and water should be supplied continuously. Liquid fertilizer or compound fertilizer can be applied once a week, and phosphorus fertilizer should be applied 1 or 2 times before flowering. During this period, sufficient nutrients should be supplied to facilitate the formation of flower buds and the bright color of flowers. In autumn, you can place it in a sunny place to promote flower bud differentiation.
