How to propagate the side branches of Perilla

How to propagate the side branches of Perilla

Preparation for Perilla frutescens cuttings

First, we need to confirm the time for side branch cuttings of Perilla. Basically, the time for cuttings should change with the planting of the mother plant of perilla. Specifically, after side branches grow on the mother plant of perilla and grow to the appropriate size, they can be taken down for cuttings.

Secondly, it is to choose a suitable cutting environment. In addition to ensuring the appropriate light and temperature, you also need to choose the right soil. You can fill the seedling pot or flower pot with soil and then start cutting.

The last step is to choose suitable cuttings. Generally, side branches from plants with stronger growth and stronger disease resistance should be selected. They should be well grown, with dark green leaves, short internodes, and 4-5 nodes retained.

Method of cuttings of lateral branches of Perilla

After selecting suitable side branches, you can start cuttings. Use a knife to remove the side branches, or break them off directly, remove the leaves at the bottom of the cuttings, and only keep the two leaves on the top. The processed cuttings can be placed indoors to dry, and then propagated after the wounds have healed, which will be more conducive to rooting.

The processed cuttings can also be inserted into rooting powder or other rooting agents, soaked for a while, and then used for cuttings to accelerate rooting.

The processed cuttings can be inserted into the soil, not too deep, about 5cm, and compact the soil.

Perilla frutescens side branch cutting maintenance

After perilla cuttings, it is necessary to maintain a suitable temperature, not exceeding 30℃, and then provide appropriate ventilation and shade, and maintain a high air humidity to prevent the branches and leaves from wilting. After about a week of cuttings, the wounds of the cuttings begin to heal and take root. At this time, you can increase the light appropriately.

Generally, after half a month of cuttings, longer roots will grow, and normal maintenance and management can be carried out at this time.
