How to prune catalpa trees

Pruning of catalpa trees in spring

The catalpa tree will sprout new branches in spring. When the new branches grow to about 30 cm, you can choose branches near the top, and then select strong branches distributed on different growth trajectories as the main branches, and then cut off all the other branches. In addition, during the growth period of the catalpa tree, buds will sprout from its trunk, which should be removed in time, otherwise they will consume too much nutrients and affect growth. In the spring of the following year, just screen the new branches on the main branches and keep two new branches.

Pruning of catalpa trees in autumn

The new branches of the catalpa tree grow very fast. After the leaves fall in late autumn, the main branches that have been left should be pruned back to 40-60 cm. Then, a certain number of outer buds should be retained. Otherwise, the crown of the catalpa tree will be narrow and the shade area will be small. Therefore, if you want to expand the crown, you must pay attention to retaining a certain number of outer buds. In late autumn of the second year, prune it again, retaining the outer buds, and then the tree shape will gradually take shape.

Pruning during catalpa maintenance

Therefore, the catalpa tree is resistant to pruning and has strong sprouting ability. In daily maintenance, it is necessary to do a good job of pruning in spring and autumn. This can reduce the burden of pruning in the spring and autumn of the following year. In future maintenance, it is only necessary to prune the crossing branches, overly dense branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, etc.

The above is the pruning method of Catalpa ovata. As long as you grasp certain pruning methods, you don’t have to worry about the growth of the Catalpa ovata tree.
