How to make the potted plum blossoms beautiful and luxuriant

Proper pruning

Most of the plum blossom buds are grown on short side branches, and there are very few flower buds growing on the top branches. Generally, when the grafted potted seedlings grow to about 10 cm, the main trunk is pruned short to promote side branches. Depending on the growth strength, leave 3 to 5 side branches and cut off the rest from the base. When the side branches grow to 8 to 10 cm, they need to be pruned. The thick and overgrown branches, thin and slender branches, crossed branches, overlapping branches, and dense branches on the side branches can be pruned off from the base at any time to make the branches sparse and the tree posture beautiful. In autumn, you can leave 10 cm of broken branches and 5 to 6 buds on long branches for shorting.

Change the pot in time

In the spring, when new buds have not yet sprouted after flowering, choose a windless and sunny day to repot. Pour the plum plant out of the pot, remove some of the soil around the root ball, cut off most of the fine roots, lift the root ball up to dry in the sun for half a day, and then put it in a pot. A small pot is preferred. When potting, only fill half of the pot with soil, leaving the roots slightly exposed. The potting soil should be loose, fertile and well-drained.
Withhold water in early summer.

In order to make the long branches produce more buds, you can withhold water when the new shoots grow to 20 cm at the end of May or early June . First, stop watering for a short period of time to allow the leaves of the plant to curl and the branches to wilt due to lack of water. Then water the plant in small amounts to slow down the growth of the seedlings. After watering in small amounts for a few days, stop watering for a short period of time again. Repeat this process several times to stop the new shoots from growing, and the nutrients will be concentrated to promote the differentiation of flower buds. In addition, care should be taken to place the flower pots in a sunny and ventilated place to prevent waterlogging during the rainy season.
