How to propagate hydrangea

A pot of hydrangea costs dozens of dollars. If you think it is expensive, you can also propagate it yourself. Ask your friends for a few branches and follow Huahua to learn how to propagate them by cuttings!

Preparing tools

Prepare the branches for cuttings, preferably those that are strong and healthy. Then prepare a utility knife, if you don't have one you can choose scissors.

Pruning cuttings

Use a utility knife to cut the lower end of the branch at a 45-degree angle, ensuring that the wound is smooth and two or three centimeters away from the growth position of the leaves, as shown in the figure below.

The upper incision should be cut flat, about one centimeter away from the leaves.

To avoid nutrient consumption and reduce water evaporation, you can cut off half or two-thirds of the leaves.

Cuttings

The cutting medium needs to be loose and breathable, vermiculite and perlite are preferred. Insert the entire part below the node into the medium, then water it thoroughly and keep the soil moist.

Post-maintenance

During the maintenance process, everyone must control their hands and not pull them out casually. The substrate must be moist. Under normal circumstances, it will take about 20 days to take root and can be potted in about a month.

How to care for hydrangea

Now that you have hydrangeas, the next step is to take care of them. If you don’t know how to take care of them, everything will be in vain. Let’s take a look at how to take care of hydrangeas with Huahua.

illumination

Hydrangeas do not like environments with strong light and cannot be placed directly in the sun, but they have high requirements for ventilation. Try to place them in a south-facing balcony with scattered light.

Watering

Hydrangeas are not tolerant to waterlogging or drought, so the soil must be kept moist during their growth period, especially during flowering. Lack of water can easily cause the flowers to wilt.

Fertilization

Embroidery flowers have relatively high requirements for fertilizers, and during the growth period, you can apply a thin liquid fertilizer every two weeks.

prune

Most hydrangeas bloom on old branches, so branch pruning should be completed in autumn, cutting off sick and aging branches to promote next year's growth. For the Endless Summer series, since the flowers bloom on new branches every year, they can be pruned more harshly.
