How to prune a rubber tree

How to prune a rubber tree

Pruning season

When pruning rubber trees, it is usually done heavily in winter, with the branches being pruned drastically, which means cutting off the upright and strong branches from the base. In summer, we generally control the growth of side branches, restrict the strong ones and keep the weak ones, to adjust the tree vigor. Follow the principle of topping strong side branches, heavily pruning strong branches, and lightly pruning thin and weak branches to promote faster growth of the plant. When pruning in summer, be careful not to prune on rainy days as this can easily cause the wound to become infected.

Trimming height

When pruning rubber trees, be sure to make sure the cut is smooth and the height is between 1 and 2 cm, not too high or too low.

When pruning, pay attention to highlighting the main trunk and main branches, thinning out dense branches, and removing buds. This can reduce unnecessary side buds, improve plant shape, and concentrate nutrients.

Pruning and maintenance

After pruning the rubber tree, you must pay attention to protecting the plant. First of all, a lot of juice will flow out from the cut. Avoid excessive juice loss and cause infection. Generally, just apply some wood ash on the wound.

The cut branches can be used for cutting propagation, which is relatively simple. Generally, as long as the temperature and humidity are maintained at a suitable level, they will take root in a semi-shaded environment in about half a month.
