Growing seedlings from bulb cuttings

Temperature and light

Water chestnut should generally choose asexual reproduction, because it prefers warmth, so it is generally propagated by its terminal buds. It will start to take root and sprout when the temperature is 15℃. When planting and when the stems and leaves are growing, the daytime temperature should be kept at 25℃, and the night temperature can be 15℃. The temperature during the bulb formation period can be controlled at around 15℃. The temperature difference between day and night is quite large, and the light is adequate, which helps the bulbs to develop well. Generally, the bulbs are fully grown in about 30 days.

Fertilization and medication

When planting, cut the mature and relatively large terminal buds of the bulb and plant them to cultivate seedlings. During the growing period, we want the leaf size to be around 1.4 cm, and remember to add nitrogen fertilizer when new leaves grow. Wait until the bulbs grow big before adding phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. Pick off the old and yellow leaves to maintain its water balance, which will help accumulate nutrients. If pests are produced during this period, use appropriate pesticides to kill them and protect the normal growth of the water chestnut seedlings. In this way, the cutting seedling cultivation is completed.

Propagation by sowing

Soil selection

Sagittaria can also be propagated by sowing seeds. First of all, you need to choose suitable soil. It is best to choose some fertile and better soil, preferably muddy soil, and then select some better seeds to plant in it.

temperature

The temperature must be controlled, not too high or too low, and it should be given appropriate light and sufficient water.

Watering

Because it prefers humid places, so make sure it has enough water. Water it more frequently before germination, and slowly reduce the amount of watering after germination. When the seedlings grow out, you can apply fertilizer to ensure the roots' nutritional needs. This way, seed propagation is completed. This method of propagation is generally used less often because seed propagation can only produce small bulbs in the same year.
