When is the best time to plant asparagus?

Asparagus is eaten as a vegetable for its tender stems and is known as the "king of vegetables". Asparagus has strong adaptability and is cold-resistant and heat-resistant. The suitable growth temperature is 15℃~25℃. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 25~30℃. When the temperature is higher than 30℃, the germination rate and germination potential will decrease. Asparagus growth will be inhibited below 5℃ and above 40℃. So when is the best time to plant asparagus?

When is the best time to plant asparagus?

Asparagus seedlings can be grown in different seasons throughout the year, but the specific time will be adjusted according to the climatic conditions in the north and south:

Seedling raising time in southern China:

From February to March, small arch sheds are used for seedling cultivation. From April to August, seedlings are raised in the open field and covered with straw thatch to protect the seedlings. From September to October, large greenhouses are used to grow seedlings. From November to January of the following year, seedlings are raised in the greenhouse.

Seedling raising time in northern regions:

From March to April, seedlings are raised in small greenhouses. From May to August, seedlings are raised in the open field and covered with straw thatch. In September, continue to grow seedlings in the small greenhouse. From October to February of the following year, seedlings are raised in greenhouses .

The best time for seedling age and transplanting:

The seedling age for summer seedlings is usually 50 to 60 days. When the seedlings grow 2 to 3 above-ground stems and the stems are about 20 cm high, they can be transplanted. The seedling age for early spring and late autumn should be 80 to 90 days, after which transplanting can be carried out. The seedling age of seedlings grown in greenhouses in winter needs to be more than 90 days, and transplanting begins when the soil thaws in early spring of the following year.

The recommended seedbed area is 20 to 30 square meters. The amount of seeds used per acre should be controlled between 50 and 75 grams. When transplanting, priority should be given to large and strong seedlings, while leaving weak seedlings in the seedbed for subsequent seedling replacement.

Asparagus Growing Conditions

Light: Asparagus likes light and needs sufficient sunlight to promote photosynthesis and growth and development. Insufficient light will affect the growth rate and yield of asparagus.

Water: Asparagus has a well-developed root system and is drought-tolerant but not waterlogged. Appropriate soil moisture is conducive to the growth of asparagus, but waterlogging in the field should be avoided to avoid root diseases.

Soil: Asparagus prefers loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam or loam. The suitable range of soil pH is 5.5~7.8, and the most suitable range is 6~6.7. Asparagus has strong adaptability to soil pH.

Fertilizer : Asparagus needs sufficient nutrients during the growing period, especially nitrogen and potassium fertilizers. Sufficient base fertilizer should be applied before planting, and additional topdressing should be applied during the peak growing season, with organic fertilizer as the main ingredient and chemical fertilizer as the supplementary ingredient.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and conditions of asparagus. There are actually many varieties of asparagus, and you can first have a comprehensive understanding of them before planting.
