How to propagate rabbit ear orchid

How to propagate rabbit ear orchid

1. Division propagation

1. This method of propagation can be chosen in spring or autumn. Generally, the plant needs to be divided once every three years.

2. As long as the rabbit ear orchid grows relatively strong and has dense pseudobulbs, it can be divided. After division, at least 5 connected pseudobulbs should be retained on each clump.

3. Before dividing the plants, you must reduce watering, and the soil in the pot should be kept relatively dry.

4. After division, put the plant in the pot. Place a layer of broken tiles at the bottom of the pot, and then cover it with a layer of coarse-grained stones, occupying one-fifth to one-quarter of the depth of the pot. Then continue to add coarse-grained soil and some fine sand.

5. When planting, you need to pay attention to the depth of burying the pseudobulbs in the soil. Leave a 2 cm gap on the edge of the flowerpot and cover it with some fine stones.

6. The final work is to water it thoroughly at one time, and then place it in a cool environment for ten days to half a month. Be sure to keep the soil moist. In the later stage, you can slowly reduce watering and switch to normal maintenance.

2. Seed propagation

1. The seeds of rabbit ear orchid are very small, and there is only one embryo that is not fully developed in the seed, so its germination ability is very low. In addition, its seed coat is not easy to absorb water, and it cannot germinate if it is cared for by conventional methods. Therefore, we must use artificial cultivation to supplement it with nutrients to help it germinate.

2. When sowing seeds, it is best to choose fruits that have not cracked. The surface should be disinfected with 75% alcohol. Then you can take out the seeds and soak them in 10% sodium hypochlorite for five to ten minutes. After taking them out, rinse them with pure water and put them in nutrient bottles for cultivation!

3. The nutrient bottle should be placed in a dark culture room and the temperature needs to be maintained at around 25 degrees. When it starts to germinate, it can be moved to a lighted place so that some protocorms can be formed. It usually takes half a year to a year from sowing to transplanting and planting.

Today we will introduce these two propagation methods. Friends who are interested may wish to study whether there are other propagation methods for rabbit ear orchid!
