How to fertilize wisteria

Does wisteria need frequent fertilization?

Wisteria is a plant that likes fertilizer very much, so fertilization is essential. During the peak growth season of wisteria, fertilizer needs to be applied multiple times to promote the growth and blooming of wisteria. Generally speaking, the fertilizer applied before wisteria blooms is mainly diluted fertilizer with a concentration of about 0.2~0.5%. The purpose of this is to make the flower color brighter and the color more intense after flowering. After flowering, long-acting phosphorus fertilizer needs to be applied to promote the wisteria to produce more buds and form a lush flowering effect.

Fertilizing wisteria can be divided into three steps:

The first step is to apply base fertilizer, preferably organic fertilizer, around the stems of the plants in autumn. After fertilizing, add appropriate amount of water to promote dilution and absorption of fertilizer.

The second step is that in early spring, when the wisteria sprouts, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers need to be applied. Try to keep the frequency to once every half a month, for a total of two fertilizations.

The third step is to apply fertilizer to the soil when the wisteria is about to bud and bloom. This topdressing should be mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, with a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer added. Note that excessive nitrogen fertilizer will result in lush branches and leaves, but few flowers, or even no flowers at all.

The fourth step is to cut off the extra stems and branches in time after the wisteria blooms, and apply fertilizer once. This top dressing needs to be distinguished from the previous step. A mixed fertilizer with nitrogen fertilizer as the main component is best, followed by basal fertilizer.
