How to Propagate Calla Lily

How to Propagate Calla Lily

1. Methods of reproduction

1. Divide the ball

This is its main way of reproduction. When it enters dormancy, we need to cut off the small spherical plants around its tuber and then plant them separately.

2. Planting

This method requires us to wait for the seeds to mature before collecting them and sowing them. They are usually planted in pots indoors. The temperature for germination should be between 18 and 24 degrees. They will germinate after 15 to 20 days, and flowers will usually grow three months after planting.

3. Division

After the flowers bloom in May and June, its leaves will slowly wither and new leaves will grow. When we change the pot to a new one in mid-September, we can remove the small stems near the mother plant and then put it in the pot.

2. Precautions

1. If it is planted outdoors, it is usually planted after autumn. The distance between two plants should be 25 cm, and fertile and sticky soil should be used, usually garden soil plus coal ash and animal manure.

2. After planting, cover it with three or four centimeters of soil, and seedlings will grow after 20 days. During the growth period, it likes sufficient water. We need to sprinkle water on its leaves and the surrounding ground frequently, and keep its leaves clean.

3. It likes warm and humid areas. It needs shade at ordinary times. When it blooms, it needs sufficient sunlight, otherwise its bracts will be green, which is not good for viewing. It needs three to five hours of light every day, otherwise the petiole will grow very long and not look good.

4. It is not very resistant to severe cold, so it needs to be moved to a greenhouse in mid-October. In addition to providing it with shade in the summer, it also needs to be sprayed with water to cool it down and keep it moist.

5. It needs a lot of fertilizer and water, and you need to water it more often during its growth period. You can use fermented chemical fertilizer for it once every two weeks. When fertilizing it, do not spread the fertilizer in the leaf sheath, otherwise it will rot. After its flower buds appear, you should add fertilizer to extend its flowering period, make the flowers bigger and more beautiful.
