White radish planting time and key points

White radish planting time and key points

Radish , as a nutritious and storable vegetable , is one of the important vegetables in the northern region in spring and winter. The time to plant radishes varies according to season and region, and the climatic conditions in different regions determine their respective planting times . Let’s learn about the planting time and key points of white radish.

1. Planting time

Spring radish is sown in early spring and harvested in early summer, with a growing period of about 25-60 days. It is more common in areas north of the Yangtze River in China. For example, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan and other places sow in February and March and harvest in April to early June; the Huanghuaihai region sows in March and April and harvests from early May to June; high-latitude regions such as the Northeast, Northwest and northern North China sow in April and May and harvest in June and July.

Summer radish is sown in May-June and harvested in July-August. Sowing too early may result in premature bolting, which is mainly used as a supplement to autumn vegetables.

Autumn radish is sown in late July to early August in the warm areas of North China and Northwest China, and harvested in late October to early November; it is sown in early to mid-July in the cold areas of Northeast China and Northwest China, and harvested in early to mid-October; it is sown in mid-June in the high-altitude areas of the north, and harvested in late September to early October.

The sowing period for winter radish is generally in early to mid-September. If sowing is too late, due to the low temperature, the leaf clusters will not grow enough, affecting the yield.

As off-season radish cultivation, depending on the different varieties, generally the medium altitude areas of 800-1200m start sowing in April-May and harvest in June-July; high altitude areas sow in May-July and harvest in July-September. Alpine radish cultivation utilizes varieties with strong winter resistance and can be planted for two crops, from the start of the season in June to the end of October.

2. Sow seeds at the right time

Determine the appropriate sowing period based on variety characteristics, environmental conditions and market demand. For example, the best sowing period for winter radish in the Yangtze River Basin is from mid-August to early September.

3. Reasonable density planting

Deeply plow the land and apply sufficient base fertilizer. When sowing, determine the reasonable planting density based on the characteristics of the variety and local soil, fertilizer and water conditions. Large radishes are sown in holes with a row spacing of 40-50 cm, 2500-3000 plants per mu, and a sowing amount of 400-500 grams. Small radishes are sown by broadcasting with a sowing amount of 1000-2000 grams per mu, and the final spacing of seedlings is 15-20 cm.

4. Fertilization

Base fertilizer is the main fertilizer, supplemented by top dressing. Base fertilizer should be applied in combination with decomposed manure containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. For example, before sowing, 1500-2000 kg of human manure per mu is applied to the surface of the bed, and after sowing, 1000-1500 kg of manure is spread on the surface of the bed.

5. Watering

After radish seedlings emerge, the root system is shallow and its drought resistance is weak. Water should be applied in time to keep the soil moist. As the plant grows, the amount of watering should be gradually increased, especially during the vigorous growth period of fleshy roots.

6. Time seedlings

Carry out appropriate shallow tillage, weed removal, pest control and other field management work. Pests such as aphids, diamondback moths, and leaf weeds have a great impact on yield.

7. Harvest

The fleshy roots can be harvested when they are sufficiently enlarged. Growing too long may result in hollowness. The average yield of winter radish per mu is 3,000-4,000 kg, and the high yield can reach more than 6,000 kg. The yield of spring radish and summer and autumn radish is relatively low, generally around 2,000 kilograms per mu.

The above is an introduction to the planting time and key points of white radish. Timely field management is the key to ensuring radish quality and yield.
