Hydrangea cutting method and time

Hydrangea cutting method and time

1. Cutting time

The ideal time for hydrangea cuttings is during the rainy season or after flowering, combined with pruning, and the cut branches can be used for cuttings. This can save branches and the cutting time is also very suitable.

2. Cutting method

1. Cut branches: Choose semi-lignified branches grown in the current year, or branches cut during pruning can be used as cutting materials. Use branches with two to three nodes in length, cut off one or two pairs of leaves at the bottom and keep only the pair of leaves at the top, and cut off two-thirds of the remaining leaves, leaving only one-third of the leaf body close to the petiole, and dip it in rooting powder or soak it in rooting agent.

2. Prepare the substrate: The substrate for cuttings cannot contain fertilizer. It is best to use plain river sand or vermiculite.

3. Insert the substrate: After filling the flowerpot with the substrate, spray water with a watering can to make the substrate sink, then use a thin stick or a wooden stick as thick as a disposable chopstick to make holes in the potting soil. The depth should be one-third of the cuttings or two to three fingers deep. Then insert the prepared cuttings into the hole and press the branches with your index or middle finger to make the substrate and cuttings tightly combined.

4. Covering film: After planting, wrap the flower pot with film and place it in a cool and ventilated place. The newly planted branches should not be exposed to sunlight.

5. Later maintenance: spray water into the flowerpot regularly to keep the humidity between 75% and 85%. You will see buds sprouting or the leaves remain intact in about 15-20 days, which proves that the cuttings have survived. If the leaves turn yellow, wilt and rot within this time, it means that the cuttings have failed.
