The growth environment and local conditions of Polygonatum sibiricum

Polygonatum sibiricum growth environment and conditions

Polygonatum sibiricum is warm-loving, cold-resistant, drought-resistant, high-temperature-resistant, shade-tolerant, and afraid of waterlogging. It cannot tolerate strong light exposure and frost, and requires high air humidity and concealment during its growth. It grows well in areas with concentrated rainfall, and often grows in bushes, forest edges, ditch edges, and shady hillsides at an altitude of 700 to 3,600 meters.

There are many varieties of Polygonatum sibiricum. For example, the long-leaf Polygonatum sibiricum is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Ningxia, Gansu and other places, while the multi-flower Polygonatum sibiricum is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Guangxi, Guangdong and other places, and the Yunnan Polygonatum sibiricum is mainly produced in Guizhou, Yunnan and other places.

Polygonatum growth environment

Polygonatum sibiricum likes a shady and humid environment. It has the characteristics of being shade-loving, cold-resistant and drought-intolerant. It grows poorly in dry areas, but grows well in a moist and semi-shady environment. It is suitable for planting in soil with a deep, loose, fertile and well-drained layer. It is not suitable for plant growth in poor, dry and sticky land.

Yellow growth temperature

Polygonatum sibiricum likes a cool environment, and the suitable growth temperature is between 15-24 degrees. Once the temperature exceeds 27 degrees, the growth is inhibited. When the temperature exceeds 32 degrees, the aboveground part is prone to wither and die, and the rhizomes lose water, shrink, and become hard.

The growth process of Polygonatum sibiricum

1. Vegetative growth period: After Polygonatum sibiricum is planted, the terminal buds begin to sprout and emerge from the soil until the first flower bud appears in April or May, which is called the vegetative growth period of Polygonatum sibiricum.

2. Vegetative growth and reproductive growth: From the appearance of the first flower bud in late April to the unfolding of the last leaf at the top in June, this process is called the period of vegetative growth and reproductive growth of Polygonatum. At this time, the growth is vigorous and the demand for nutrients is very high, so it is necessary to increase the application of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers appropriately.

3. Reproductive growth period: From the time when the last leaf at the top fully unfolds in June to the fruit harvest in late November is called the reproductive growth period. The peak flowering period is also a transition period, and the fruiting period and the flowering period partially overlap and staggered.

4. Transition period: The transition period is from the withering of the above-ground part of Polygonatum in late November to the harvest in the following year. During this period, the underground rhizomes of Polygonatum need to complete the accumulation and transformation of effective ingredients, which plays an important role in the quality of Polygonatum.

Time and method of planting Polygonatum sibiricum

1. Polygonatum is mainly planted in March and April in spring and September and October in autumn. The best time is in spring when the temperature rises, the germination and growth ability is strong, it is easy to cultivate, and the growth rate is fast. Planting in autumn requires an extra winter of care, the growth will be inhibited, and maintenance will be difficult, so it is best to plant in spring.

2. Choose sunny, fertile, well-structured land without water accumulation. Renovate the soil in advance to a depth of about 30 cm. Apply sufficient base fertilizer and maintain a reasonable planting density with a plant spacing of 15 cm, a row spacing of 10 cm and a depth of 5 cm. Cover and compact the soil after sowing, then water. Do not water directly, as the seeds will be washed away.
