The growth environment and local conditions of Setaria viridis

The growth environment and conditions of Setaria

Setaria is commonly found in wilderness and roadsides. It is a common weed that is mainly distributed in temperate and warm temperate zones and is found throughout China.

Green foxtail grass growing conditions

Foxtail grass prefers a warm, humid and sunny environment. It is suitable for planting in loose, fertile, humus-rich sandy loam and clay loam. It has a strong adaptability to the environment and grows on both sides of the road. It does not require much care and can grow well.

Setaria growth temperature

Setaria prefers a warm environment. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 15 to 30 degrees. The plant is not cold-resistant. The above-ground part will turn yellow and wither in winter, and will sprout in the spring of the following year.

The growth process of foxtail grass

After sowing in spring, Setaria viridis sprouts from mid-April to May, with the peak growth period in early and mid-May and the fruiting period from August to October. Its seeds are spread by wind, running water and manure. After a winter dormancy period, they germinate in the spring of the following year.

Planting time and method of foxtail grass

Setaria seeds are suitable for sowing in spring and autumn, specifically from February to May in spring and from September to October in autumn. At this time, the temperature and humidity are suitable, the seed germination rate is the highest, and the growth is the best.

Before sowing foxtail grass, the soil needs to be renovated, weeds and stones cleared, and then sufficient base fertilizer applied. The propagation methods include row sowing or broadcast sowing. The row spacing is 30 to 35 cm, the planting depth is 1 to 2 cm, and the seeds are covered and pressed after sowing.

The young foxtail grass seedlings are relatively fragile, but the spring-sown grass grows vigorously and needs to be removed in time. Some dilute nitrogen fertilizer needs to be applied during the growth period, which will significantly promote its regeneration and improve the grass quality. It rarely has diseases and pests, but there are also pests such as locusts and crickets, so attention should be paid to prevention and control.
