How to prune creeper

When to prune creeper

Ivy pruning can be done in spring or autumn. Proper pruning can promote its growth, and the warm climate at this time is conducive to its growth.

When taking cuttings of Parthenocissus quinquefolius, cut 20-30 cm long stems and vines, insert them into the open-air seedbed, water them, keep the soil moist, and the vines will soon grow and survive. Hard branch cuttings are best done between March and April in spring, while soft branch cuttings are done in summer.

Pruning of creeper branches

The maintenance and pruning of ivy is very convenient. Usually, a lot of pruning is not required. Just tidy up the miscellaneous branches (vines) and promptly cut off the dense branches, dry branches, diseased and insect-infested branches, etc. to make them evenly distributed.

Proper pruning of ivy should be done during its growing season, and branches and vines should be trimmed and arranged at doors and windows to prevent excessive growth and covering the windows or affecting light. In summer, attention should be paid to combing the branches and leaves to prevent rot due to lack of ventilation inside.

You can design patterns on the wall and cut off the branches and leaves outside the ivy pattern to create a more ideal and lifelike pattern. The main pruning time is in winter. If the branches (vines) are too messy during the growing season, they also need to be tidyed up in time.

Tips for pruning creepers

If the branches of the creeper planted in the flowerpot are very vigorous, but there are few branches, and the leaves begin to turn red, you can start pruning at this time, leaving only a dozen centimeters of the main trunk, and new branches will grow next year.

Prune the ivy during its leaf-falling period, apply organic fertilizer as base fertilizer before planting, cut off stems that are too long, and water it sufficiently, so that it will be more vigorous and grow faster next year.

Precautions for pruning creeper

Ivy is a shade-loving climbing plant, so it needs to be pruned during maintenance. When it has covered a wall and some of its flowers have extended into the house, they need to be properly pruned.
