Where do fruit tree seeds come from?

Naked ferns are the most primitive terrestrial plants. As plants continue to evolve, their reproduction also forms special organs. After a period of time, some plants began to reproduce by spores. Spore plants were initially indistinguishable between male and female. Later, some plants had two types of spores of different sizes and male and female. The female spores and male spores combined to develop into seeds.

What do fruit tree seeds look like?

Different varieties of fruit trees have different seeds, just like apple seeds, which are the black particles in the center of the apple, are very small, like tiny melon seeds.

Fruit tree seed dispersal

Fruit trees rely on animals to spread their seeds. Generally, fruit trees have rich flesh. Animals eat the flesh, and the seeds that cannot be digested will be excreted with feces, so that the seeds will take root and sprout.

How to get fruit tree seeds

If the fruit tree is relatively tall, you need to climb up the tree to harvest it, and pay attention to safety. For shorter mother trees, you can use a ladder to harvest. The flesh of the fruit on the fruit tree generally cannot crack naturally, and needs to be peeled open by manpower to take out the seeds.

How to save seeds from fruit trees

1. Sealed storage method: After collecting the fruit tree seeds, dry them, then put them in cans, barrels, bottles and other containers, seal them with wax, and store them in a cool and well-ventilated place.

2. Sand storage method: after a light snow but before the soil freezes, dig a 60-90 cm deep trench or pit in a high, well-drained, dry, sheltered and cool place. The length and width depend on the number of seeds. Spread 10 cm thick wet sand on the bottom of the trench, mix the seeds and wet sand and pile them into the trench.

Fruit tree seed planting

1. Growth process

After the fruit tree seeds are planted, it takes 8-10 days to germinate and enter the seedling stage. Appropriate water and fertilizer management is required. Then it enters the flower bud differentiation period. The temperature and light need to be controlled. The growth temperature should be controlled between 12-18°C. From April to June, it enters the flowering period. It needs to be watered enough and the flower buds should be thinned out in time. Around June, it enters the physiological fruit drop period and sufficient nutrient absorption needs to be ensured. From July to August, it enters the fruit expansion period and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers need to be applied. It takes about 3 years until fruiting.

2. Seed sowing

Fruit tree seeds can be harvested and sown in time, or in spring and autumn, generally in February and March in the south and in March and April in the north. In autumn, sowing is done in November and December in the south and in the north from mid-October to before the soil freezes.

3. Seed planting

Before sowing fruit trees, water the soil in the seedbed to make it moist, then sow the seeds in the furrows and cover them with 1 cm thick soil. Do not tamp it down at this time, otherwise the soil will be tight and have poor ventilation, which is not conducive to seed germination. After sowing, cover it with a layer of plastic film to keep warm and moisturize. If sowing by broadcasting, just sow the seeds directly on the watered seedbed. It is best not to use this method.
