How to prune magnolia

How to prune magnolia

When to prune magnolias

It is usually better to prune magnolias in summer and autumn, that is, between June and mid-to-late August. If you prune at this time, you can appropriately cut off some old leaves, which will be conducive to the sprouting of new branches and leaves, thereby promoting more flowering of the magnolia tree.

If you want to use the pruned branches of magnolia for cuttings, the branches need to be strong enough and 10 cm in length. Soak the branches in naphthaleneacetic acid for a while, take them out, dry them, and then directly insert them into the prepared soil for cuttings.

How to prune magnolia branches

During the growth process of magnolia, if old, yellow, or weak branches appear, these branches need to be pruned immediately. This can not only reduce nutrient consumption, but also promote the plant's subsequent strong growth.

In addition, once the plant has yellowed branches, diseased branches, or insect-infested branches, they should be removed in time to avoid infection of other healthy branches, which can also promote better growth of the plant.

During the seedling stage, some old leaves may appear due to metabolism during the growing season and need to be removed appropriately. This will facilitate the growth and sprouting of new branches and leaves, as well as later flowering.

Magnolia pruning tips

After the magnolia flower is planted, it needs to be pruned. When it adapts to the new environment, it needs to be budded, that is, the new buds on the plant are directly removed. Repeat this 2-3 times to control the height of the plant and make the plant grow side branches.

Magnolia pruning makes it grow faster

Magnolias grow quickly, so they can be pruned at any time during the growing season. If you see dead branches and yellow leaves, or other poorly growing branches and leaves, you can cut them off directly. When winter comes, you should pay attention to thinning out the side branches appropriately to reduce nutrient consumption and help it survive the winter.

Magnolia pruning and flowering

If you want the magnolia to bloom, you can pinch the top of the flower appropriately when it grows new buds to encourage it to grow more side branches and produce more flowers.

Magnolia pruning precautions

When pruning magnolia flowers, you need to be careful. Generally, you should prune the tender branches and try to prune the woody branches as little as possible. After the magnolia branches become woody, there will be cottony material in the center, which will easily absorb water and become infected after being cut.

If you prune old branches of magnolia, you need to use sharp scissors when pruning to keep the wound smooth and flat. It is best to wrap the wound with plastic film.
