How to prune petunias

When to prune petunias

It is generally more appropriate to prune petunias in spring and autumn, because the climate in these two seasons is more suitable, which is better for the plants to restore their growth potential.

If you want to use the pruned branches of petunia for cuttings, you need to choose strong and pest-free branches, about 10 cm in length, let the wounds dry, remove 2/3 of the leaves, pour the substrate into the flowerpot, insert the cuttings into the small holes, then compact the soil around them, water them enough, and then cover them with plastic wrap.

How to prune petunias

When weak branches and dead branches appear on the petunia, they need to be cut off to avoid nutrient consumption and encourage the plant to sprout new buds. The plant also needs to be pruned in time after the flowers fade. Pruning the withered flowers and dead branches that have bloomed can also avoid the consumption of a large amount of nutrients.

Petunias are prone to diseases and pests in summer, and if it is too hot, the roots and leaves can easily damage the seedlings, which can wilt easily. Leave some space when pruning, and remember not to cut too low. After pruning the old seedlings, you can apply a layer of carbendazim on the wounds.

Petunia Pruning Tips

The method for pruning petunias is to shorten each branch by 1/3~1/2, leaving branches that can sprout. If the branches of petunias are not too long, do not prune them, because it will take a long time for the plant to bloom after pruning. Plants with longer branches can be hung up for appreciation.

Precautions for pruning petunias

Try to prune petunias as evenly as possible. If you don't keep it moving while it grows, it will easily grow vigorously on one side and be bald on the other. In addition, petunias are prone to aphids. Once aphids are discovered, do not spray them with pyrethroids to avoid drug damage that will hinder its normal growth.
