Potato planting methods and precautions

When to plant potatoes

Potatoes can be planted from October to December and harvested from January to March of the following year. If the temperature and humidity are suitable, potatoes can be planted in spring, summer, autumn and winter. The specific planting time depends on the local temperature.

How to grow potatoes

There are two methods of potato cultivation: breeding and sowing.

Breeding and reproduction method: Choose healthy potatoes with a diameter of about 3 cm. Disinfect and fertilize the soil before planting. Water thoroughly 10 days in advance. When the flowering period comes, fertilize in time to increase yield.

Seeding propagation method: Select healthy and plump potatoes, cut them into pieces with a knife, plant them in the soil, control the spacing, and avoid too dense. The best time for sowing is March. The prerequisite for sowing is to disinfect the soil.

Steps for growing potatoes

1. Site selection and land preparation: If you want to have a high yield of potatoes, you must choose a suitable plot of land for planting. Choose land with fertile and loose soil. Sandy land is best for potato planting. Dig deeper in advance and apply base fertilizer.

2. Seed treatment: Potatoes should be taken out half a month before sowing and germinated at a certain temperature. After germination, move them outdoors to dry for a week. Cut the potatoes where they sprout. One potato can generally be cut into three to four pieces. Then, cover them with dust and soil and they can be used for sowing.

3. Field management: Potatoes need a certain amount of space to grow, so they should be planted at certain intervals during sowing. Fertilization should be done once during planting, mainly with farmyard manure. Note that the fertilizer cannot directly contact the seed block. Weeds should be removed during the growth period to prevent diseases and pests.

Potato maintenance and management matters

Potatoes prefer a cool environment and are not resistant to high temperatures. The average daily temperature during the growing period should be 17 to 21 degrees. Under sufficient light, the tuber yield and starch content are both high. It has strict requirements on the soil. Deep, loose, fertile, well-drained and ventilated soil rich in organic matter is most suitable. Soil with large porosity and good ventilation is best.
