How and when to plant chives

How and when to plant chives

Chive planting time and month

The sowing time of chives is generally in spring and autumn, usually from March to April. It can also be sown from September to October. The suitable temperature for chive germination is between 13-20 degrees.

Planting chives in spring

When planted in spring, the most suitable growth temperature for chives is between 15 and 20 degrees. It is best to plant them in spring. Use a bag of seeds and scatter them. You can compact them slightly after scattering. Apply urea every time you water them after they emerge from the soil. It will be fine when they are more than one foot tall.

Planting chives in summer

When planting chives in the summer, the soil needs to be kept dry and moist, and attention should be paid to timely drainage on rainy days. Especially now that it is July and it is rainy in the south, more attention should be paid to field drainage. The northern region is dry and rainy, so watering needs to be increased appropriately. It is best to water in the evening. Stop watering three to five days before harvest, and pay attention to maintaining the environmental temperature.

Planting chives in the fall

Plant chives in autumn when the temperature is suitable for chive growth. Choose a suitable method for cultivation, either sowing or division. When sowing, sprinkle chive seeds in the soil and cover with about 0.5-1 cm of soil. Spray water with a spray bottle to keep the soil moist. After about 7 days, the chives will germinate, and then place the sprouting container in the sun for sunlight.

Growing chives in winter

When planting chives in winter, the light is relatively weak. The plants should be placed in a well-lit location and provided with a temperature of 10-20 degrees, not lower than 8 degrees. More watering can be done during the growing period, and fertilizer should be applied every 7-10 days.

How to grow chives

Sprinkle the chive seeds evenly on the soil, cover them with about one to two centimeters of soil, and then water them thoroughly. They will germinate in two weeks. The seedlings grow relatively slowly and can be transplanted about a month after germination. Ten plants or so form a patch. Water them when planting, but it is okay not to transplant them.

1. The suitable growth temperature of chives is 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, the germination temperature is 13 to 20 degrees Celsius, and the suitable temperature for stem and leaf growth is 18 to 23 degrees Celsius.

2. Chives like a humid environment. If the soil is dry, you need to apply fertilizer and water until water appears at the bottom of the pot. Avoid excessive dryness or wetness.

3. When planting chives, you can apply base fertilizer. Fermented fertilizer should be used in appropriate amounts. Top dressing should be done in early October and March of the following year. Fermented fertilizer should also be used for top dressing.

4. Chives are most susceptible to diseases and pests, especially downy mildew, in high temperature, high humidity, poor ventilation and cold seasons. Therefore, we must pay attention to taking appropriate cooling and warming measures in these two seasons.
