Bowl lotus planting methods and precautions

How to plant lotus

1. Sowing time: Bowl lotus grows vigorously and has no dormant period. As long as the water temperature is above 16 degrees, it can be sown at any time. Under suitable temperature and light, it takes about 55 days from sowing to flowering in spring and about 70 days in autumn.

2. Seed processing: The shell of the lotus seed is very hard and dense, and needs to be artificially broken before soaking. One end of the lotus seed should be protruding and the other end should be concave. Grind a layer of skin at the end with a small concave point. Mainly, do not damage the seed kernel and do not remove the shell. The purpose of grinding the skin is to allow water to enter and make the seeds absorb water and swell.

3. Soak the seeds to germinate: soak the cracked seeds in warm water at 20 to 40 degrees. When the water temperature is below 20 degrees, it is difficult for the seeds to germinate. When the temperature is 30 degrees, the seeds can usually germinate after soaking for 3-5 days. During this period, the water can be changed once a day. Under normal circumstances, as long as the seed coat can absorb water, it will swell and germinate.

Bowl lotus maintenance and management matters

1. Fertilization. The water lily likes fertilizer. Apply thin fertilizer frequently during the growth period. If there is insufficient fertilizer, the rooting and leafing will be slow and lack vitality. Base fertilizer can be applied when planting, and a small amount of decomposed cake fertilizer liquid or bean bran should be mixed in as base fertilizer.

2. Light. Bowl lotus is a sun-loving plant. If it receives less than 4 hours of light a day, flower buds cannot be formed. During its growth period, it needs to be placed on a sunny balcony or windowsill so that it receives full sunlight. When the floating leaves cover the surface of the pot, they must be cleaned in time, otherwise it will affect the light transmittance.

3. Pruning: When the bowl lotus grows vigorously and the leaves grow too many and too dense, they can be thinned out in time to facilitate the plant's breathing and ventilation, which is also beneficial for flowering. When multiple plants are planted in the same container, the leaves will compete for sunlight, so they should be planted in separate pots in time.
