When is the best time to prune yew?

Pruning of yew

Pruning yew can reduce nutrient consumption. Timely pruning of diseased and insect-infested branches and dense branches can increase ventilation and light transmission, which can help the plant grow better and reduce the occurrence of diseases and pests.

Yew pruning time

Yew bonsai can be pruned during the growing season and the dormant period, that is, in summer and winter. Generally, pruning is done from April to October in summer, and from October to April of the following year in winter. In the south where the four seasons are not obvious, it is called summer pruning. Yew is pruned about three times a year, and pruning propagation is best done in May and June.

How to prune yew

1. Pinch and remove buds

During the spring growth period of yew, we must pay attention to timely pinching and bud removal, which can control the unbalanced growth of branches and buds, and inhibit the phenomenon of double heads of main branches. After the plant sprouts more new buds in spring, you can pinch them off to avoid too many new buds and consume a lot of nutrients.

2. Thinning of dense branches

The yew tree grows relatively fast, and sometimes grows very densely in a short growing period, so the dense and crossed parts need to be pruned to at least allow some light to pass through and maintain a balance with the sparse plants.

3. Prune the long branches

During the growth period of yew, there will always be fast-growing branches and buds, which will reduce the ornamental value of yew. You can cut off the overgrown branches and buds, and then cut off the thin and diseased branches and buds in the plant. In this way, the plant will be very beautiful and its ornamental value will be greatly enhanced.

Precautions for pruning yew

When pruning yew branches, be sure to use pruning tools to cut off part of the bark and xylem of the plant. Note that the tools must be disinfected in advance. This kind of pruning has a good growth-promoting effect on the plant and will promote the growth of branches and buds below the wound.
