What is the best season to plant pitaya? What is the best month to plant potted pitaya seedlings?

There are many ways to grow pitaya. You can choose to build a shed to grow it, but the most common method is column cultivation. The advantages of column cultivation are lower production costs and higher land utilization.

The column cultivation method is to erect a cement column, and then plant dragon fruit seedlings around the column, allowing the dragon fruit to grow upward along the cement column.

When is pitaya planted?

Dragon fruit can be planted all year round in the south , and in the north it is planted in June and July . Because dragon fruit grows best in a warm and humid environment, the climate and temperature during these time periods are more suitable for the growth and development of dragon fruit.

Dragon fruit can be grown in greenhouses all year round, but the best time to grow it is from March to May .

Potted pitaya planting time

It is recommended to plant pitaya in potted plants in spring and autumn . The climate at this time is most suitable for the growth of the plant, more conducive to seed germination, and has a higher planting survival rate.

The correct way to grow dragon fruit

1. Select site and set up the scaffold

The temperature around the pitaya planting site should not be too low. There should be sufficient sunlight and clean water around. The soil should have good drainage and permeability. After selecting the planting site, the land should be properly prepared and deep plowed to make it flat.

Because pitaya is a vine-growing fruit, we also need to do a good job of trellising, and keep the trellising height at about 1.5-1.8. In the later stage, the trellising can be appropriately adjusted according to the growth of the pitaya, which is convenient for management and harvesting.

2. Planting management

Before planting pitaya, we need to do a good job of field management, deep plowing the soil, spraying pesticides for disinfection. Then apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly hole-fertilization, usually digging fertilizer holes under the scaffolding, and applying about 6kg of farmyard manure in each fertilizer hole.

Then cover the soil to retain fertilizer. The height of the soil should be about 10cm above the ground. When the soil is gradually level with the ground, you can start planting. Pay attention to controlling the planting depth. Do not go too deep to avoid reducing the survival rate. After planting, water the roots once and cover with some straw to prevent water and fertilizer loss.

3. Fertilizer and water management

After the pitaya is planted, it is necessary to pay attention to watering and keep the soil moist. The pitaya has a relatively large demand for fertilizer during its growth, so we must also do a good job of fertilizing during planting.

During the pitaya seedling stage, because the seedlings have weak absorption and resistance, the dosage should be controlled and the principle of applying more but less should be followed. Then, when the seedlings grow to about 20cm, apply organic fertilizer once a month.

After entering autumn, the growth vitality of pitaya decreases. At this time, you can appropriately reduce the amount of fertilizer or even not apply it. However, you should pay attention to watering, but the water should not be too much. If there is too much water, drain it in time.

4. Pest and disease control

To prevent and control diseases and insect pests, spray fungicides and insecticides evenly throughout the garden every month to strengthen prevention. When the disease is found, corresponding treatment should be taken, and the affected parts should be cut off to prevent the bacteria from spreading to other healthy plants and expanding the affected area, and then spray the corresponding pesticides for prevention and control.
