How long is the growth cycle of Scutellaria baicalensis?

Introduction to the growth of Scutellaria baicalensis

Scutellaria baicalensis usually grows in sunny and dry places such as hillsides, dikes, and forest edges. It is not very demanding on the land and has strong adaptability. Wild Scutellaria baicalensis is mainly distributed in the central and eastern Inner Mongolia and most of the three northeastern provinces in China. The main production areas are the four major production areas of Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu.

Scutellaria baicalensis growth cycle

Scutellaria baicalensis likes sunshine, warmth, and is resistant to severe cold. It tolerates drought but is afraid of waterlogging. It is not very demanding on soil, but is suitable for growing in well-drained, fertile sandy loam. Its growth cycle is generally 1-2 years.

Growth rate of Scutellaria baicalensis

The growth rate of Scutellaria baicalensis is relatively fast. One-year-old plants generally begin to bud 2 months after emergence. Two-year-old and later plants usually begin to bud 70-80 days after emergence. They will start to bloom about 10 days after budding, and the fruits will begin to mature after about 40 days.

Scutellaria baicalensis growth cycle management

Generally speaking, about every 3-4kg of fresh Scutellaria baicalensis root can be processed into 1kg of dry goods. Usually, about 200-300kg of dry goods can be harvested per acre, so the yield is still quite considerable.

Temperature Management

Scutellaria baicalensis is not very strict in terms of temperature requirements. The suitable temperature for seed germination is 15-18 degrees. It can still safely overwinter at low temperatures around minus 35 degrees. It can also grow normally at high temperatures of 35-41 degrees in summer, but it cannot withstand continuous high temperatures above 40 degrees, which will cause death.

Fertilization management

Fertilizer should be applied after Scutellaria baicalensis seedlings are established, mainly human feces or urea, which can promote plant growth. After the plants turn green in the second or third year, decomposed cake fertilizer can be applied. In late June, phosphate ammonium granular fertilizer should be applied before ridge closing. Fertilizer should be applied by digging trenches, and water should be applied after application.
