Can dragon fruit be grown in pots?

Dragon fruit can be grown in pots. Potting is just a method. You can plant it according to your needs. If you want to sell it to the market, then planting it in the ground is the best choice. If you don’t have a pot, it’s also okay, but it will take longer to bear fruit.

The root growth of potted pitaya cannot be restricted, and there should be air holes at the bottom of the pot to drain excess water. It is best to choose ceramic ones. The diameter of the flowerpot should be more than 35cm. The pitaya potted plant can bear fruit in about 3 to 6 years. Generally, if the pitaya is sown in a pot, it will bloom and bear fruit in 5 to 6 years.

How to cultivate dragon fruit in potted plants

1. Soil preparation

When planting pitaya in a potted plant, you need to choose soil that suits its growth needs. Pitaya does not like soil with a high alkalinity content, so you can choose a well-prepared nutrient soil for its soil.

2. Pruning

When the potted dragon fruit is more than 10 cm high from the pot surface, it can be topped. It is best to choose a position about 5-6 cm high from the pot surface, and interrupt the main branches horizontally.

3. Watering

Dragon fruit is a tropical species, so it does not require much water. Therefore, it cannot be watered frequently. You have to check whether the soil is completely dry. If it is, water it, and wet all the soil at once. Otherwise, if you water it frequently, its roots will rot and the plant will die.

4. Fertilization

When fertilizing dragon fruit, you need to follow the principle of applying small amounts of fertilizer frequently. It cannot absorb too many nutrients at one time, so when fertilizing it, you must first dilute the fertilizer with clean water before watering it.

5. Artificial pollination

When pitaya is about to bear fruit, it needs human support because the success rate of its own pollination and fruiting is too low. So if we want it to bear more fruit, we have to pollinate it artificially. This will increase the fruiting rate and the quality of the fruit will be better.
