Where are the best places to grow blackcurrants?

Blackcurrant growing conditions

Black currant prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight and is very cold-resistant. It is suitable for cultivation in cold northern regions. It can be planted in deep, loose, fertile soil rich in organic matter.

Blackcurrant growing climate

Black currant is suitable for growing in the cold environment and climate of the plateau. If the temperature is too high, it will be detrimental to the growth of black currant. Sufficient light must be ensured during the growth period so that the fruit will taste sweeter and have higher economic value.

Suitable areas for growing blackcurrants

Black currants are best planted on flat land because the soil is deep and fertile, manual management is convenient, irrigation conditions are good and mechanized operations are convenient. If you choose mountainous or sloping land, it is best if the slope does not exceed 15 degrees, and you should also choose a sunny place.

Black currant is mainly distributed in the Greater Khingan Range area of Heilongjiang Province in China. There are more wild black currant in northern Xinjiang. Black currant production in Xinjiang is in its infancy. More than 600 acres of black currant are planted in Jimsar, Tacheng and Yili regions, and more than 1,200 acres have been cultivated in Altay region. The main international production areas are Russia, Malaysia and the United States.

Blackcurrant planting time

Black currant can be planted in spring and autumn. The spring time is early to mid-April, when the soil has just thawed and the seedlings are easy to survive. It is better to plant early rather than late. It can also be planted in mid-October. The survival rate of autumn planting is higher than that of spring planting. The roots can start to move in the spring of the following year, and grow vigorously after thawing.

Blackcurrant planting tips

We usually choose to plant black currants in spring and autumn, around April in spring and before October to freeze in autumn. The planting depth is generally 6-8 cm. Apply base fertilizer in the planting hole, backfill half of the soil, plant the seedlings straight, compact them so that the roots of the seedlings are closely connected to the soil, and water them sufficiently.

After planting, it is necessary to apply fertilizer frequently. It is best to use decomposed farmyard manure combined with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer for fertilization. The water required by black currant during the growth process must also be met. The soil must be kept moist at all times. In the rainy season, it must be drained in time. The soil in the orchard must be kept loose, and regular inter-row cultivation and weeding must be carried out.
