How to care for lilies in winter

Are lilies afraid of cold?

Lilies are cold-resistant and not afraid of frost. The best growth temperature for lilies is between 15 and 25 degrees, but they grow poorly below 10 degrees or above 30 degrees. Therefore, they must be moved indoors in time for winter care.

How to care for lilies in winter

1. Keep warm

Lilies are not resistant to severe cold and will wither and die in an ambient temperature below 0 degrees. When growing lilies in the north in winter, they need to be moved to a warm indoor place for maintenance in November each year. In the south in winter, lilies can be placed outdoors and wrapped in plastic bags to keep them warm.

2. Apply fertilizer

In order for lilies to survive the winter successfully, they should be fertilized once at the end of December each year. You can choose decomposed organic fertilizer or farmyard manure to improve the cold resistance of lilies. However, if you want to grow lilies in winter, you must first postpone fertilizing the plants to avoid fertilizer damage.

3. Maintain humidity

When keeping lilies indoors in winter, do not place them under the radiator to avoid poor growth of the lilies. If the environment is too dry, use a spray bottle to spray water mist around the lilies to increase the air humidity, and use clean water to wash the lily branches and leaves to make them more beautiful.

4. Maintenance and management

When caring for lilies in winter, they need to be treated with a one-time insecticide to avoid infection by lily diseases and pests. At the same time, the withered branches and leaves and withered flowers should be cut off. After the arrival of spring, the lilies should be moved to a sunny place to allow them to grow healthily.

Precautions for lily cultivation in winter

Plenty of sunlight: In winter, we need to keep lilies in sufficient sunlight. If there is too little light, the lily buds will easily fall off, the flower stems will become longer, and the lilies will also grow too tall.

Warm environment: In winter, we need to move the lilies indoors for maintenance at 15 degrees, and control the temperature between 15 and 25 degrees, so that the lilies can grow vigorously and bloom in winter.

Humid environment: Keep the soil in the pot moist in winter, otherwise it will be detrimental to the growth of lilies, the growth of lily stems, and even the flowering of lilies.

Appropriate fertilization: Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers can be applied to lilies to promote flowering. After the lilies grow into flower stems, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizers can be applied to the lilies in a ratio of 1:1:1 to facilitate the growth and development of lilies.
